Transacation Limits @ Walgreens

Billy L. has informed me that the Walgreens in Newburgh, IN is now limiting customers to two transactions.  I guess people have started clearing shelves when an item is free.

Although this doesn't effect me, I would encourage people who it does effect to plan their shopping trips a little better.

On the bright side, maybe the Newburgh, IN Wags will have this in stock now...

FREE Trident Vitality Gum @ CVS

If you are a regular to the Magic Coupon Machine you may have noticed that the coupons change each week.  What I have gathered, however, is that the coupons spitting out this week are often items on sale next week.  This was defintely the case with some coupons from last week.

If you were lucky to get the $1 off any Trident or Stride single pack coupon from the MCM, then go to CVS and pick up the Trident Vitality gum.  This week it is on sale for $.99 (coupon will automatically adjust down to $.99) making the gum free.  But the bonus is that this week Trident Vitality has a $.99 ECB!

FREE gum and get paid $1!  BONUS!

FREE CVS Green Tag

This week CVS' Magic Coupon Machine is sptting out a coupon for a FREE Green Tag.  If you are not familiar with it, it is a small plastic tag that ties to your resuseable bag.  When you shop at CVS, scan your ExtraCare card, some items and then make sure that the cashier scans your Green Tag.  After 4 transactions (1 per store per day), you will get back $1.  That is like getting $.25 per trip!  I have already racked up $5 from my green tag just this year.

Remember to use it in the pharmacy too!

CHEAP Open Pit BBQ Sauce @ Schnucks

Open Pit BBQ sauce have a "Save $.35 on any (1)" label around the bottle neck.  The small 12oz bottle is on sale for $1 this week.  Save an instant 35% by using this coupon.

Realistic Expectations

A friend of mine mentioned couponing a few weeks before it was fashionable.  I started researching different websites and learning how to get the system to work with my shopping habits instead of falling into the marketing trap retailers want you to.  I hunted for great deals and places to shop.  And I saved a ton of money.  With TLC's Extreme Couponing show, however, things have changed.  People expect to save 99% at the grocery.  Let's be honest, no one really does that.  If you read online, the people featured on the show were told by TLC to be extreme to the point where it is plain wacky.  Who buys 124 bottles of Excedrin and stores it for a rainy day?  Really?

So let's discuss what to expect - realistically.  Coupons will rarely get you everything for free.  There are some things you need that you would be hard-pressed to find coupons.  For example, when is the last time you saw coupons for watermelons? apples? oranges? non-speciality or flavored milk?  Yea, I didn't think you saw a coupon for those things either.  So can you survive on free candy and discounted, pre-packaged deli meat?  Sure.  But you probably won't be healthy.

Couponing is there to save you money.  That is for sure.  But these shows make it seem like you can go and pay $2 for $1000 worth of groceries.  That is just not going to happen.  Remember, we are being real here.  But what CAN happen is that you save money.

This evening at Schnucks I paid $48 for $75 worth of groceries.  My cart included Cherrios, corn (canned and fresh), green beans (canned and fresh), potatoes (boxed hash browns and fresh), salad bag, many cans of fruit and some frozen items among other things.  Did I cringe at paying nearly $50 for groceries? NO WAY!  I saved 36%!  I saved $27!  What is $27 to you?  A few hours of work?  1/3 tank of gas? 1 month phone bill? Childcare for 1 day?  $27 means different things to different people.  And if it means that I get a few dirty stares shopping slowly so I can save 36% on groceries, then so be it.

So what is $27 to you?  Think about it.  And if saving that money is a good thing for you and your family, then maybe couponing isn't such a bad thing.

Why I Coupon

Jayme and I started trying to save money long ago.  A penny saved is a penny earned, right?  We started penny pinching when I first moved to Evansville to live with her the better part of a decade ago.  She worked and went to school and I worked for modest pay... part-time.  I had no health insurance, a car that always gave me trouble and lots of dreams of pricey items.  But it is hard to lie, we were broke.  If it was not on sale, it only had our attention as we walked down the grocery aisle.  Some might say our lives were boring since we never went out to party and our only treat was a visit to Steak and Shake.  But we had each other.

Jayme and I have been through rough times, but we have always found a way through.  Those frugal behaviors years ago helped us pay rent, car insurance and massive amounts of student loan debt  even on low incomes.  So if they worked before, they can work now too.  We have been very blessed to be where we are now.  And I am thankful every day for those countless blessings.  "Ask any ye shall receive.  Knock and the door shall be opened for you."  Now I have a young boy growing up fast, a house and am nearing my bachelor's degree.  Why is this NOT the time to save for the future?  This is why I coupon.

Find Coupons @ Walmart.com

Still searching online for coupon sites?  I have found a great resource at Walmart's coupon site here.  These are manufacturer coupons, so feel free to use wherever you are shopping.

While there, make sure you read Walmart's new coupon policy.  Did you know that if your coupon use exceeds the amount of money in your transaction, Walmart will give you cash back?  If not, then maybe you need to take a minute and read up on this here.

FREE Scotch Tape @ Walgreens

Walgreens has an in-ad coupon for Scotch tape where you buy (1) at $1.99 and get (2) free.  This will apply to the 300 and 450 yard tape.

Go here and print page 2 of the PDF (since in PDF form, you can print multiples).

Buy (3) Scotch Tape for $1.99 each
Use (2) Scotch tape coupons (USE THIS FIRST!)
Use (1) in-ad coupon for B1 @ $1.99 get (2) FREE
FREE SCOTCH TAPE!

Did you get your $10 off $50 @ Schnucks?

Did you print your $10 off any $50 purchase at Schnucks yet?  If not, you can get one by registering here and watching 14 short videos.  Remember, the expiration date is 3 days after your get the coupon, so make sure you are ready to shop for groceries.  Again, this is up to an instant 20% off your shopping trip, so this is a great way to save money on food.  *NOTE* You can only print once, so make sure that your printer is working before hitting print.

When you checkout, you may want to give the $10 off coupon first.  This will insure that the register knows that you have exceeded the $50 minimum purchase.  In my experience, if you give other coupons first (especially store coupons) it acts like discounts rather than coupons.  So if you are looking to spend a certain amount before a $ off coupon will work, it is always a best practice to hand over the $ off coupon before any other clipped coupon.

CHEAP (Clearance) Frutis 2-in-1 Shampoo @ Walgreens

Be on the lookout for the clearance Frutis 2-in-1 shampoo and conditioner.  It normally retails at $4.99 but is on clearance for only $2.59.  If you have a $1 off coupon this will make an even better deal!

FREE Dove Men's Deodorant @ Walgreens

I love when there is free personal care items at the stores.  It gives me a chance to stock up and only pay sales tax.

If you already had a $1 off any Dove product or $1 off any Men's Body Wash, great!  If you missed the deal (since it is no longer printing on other sites, go here and print while you can.  You will need to enter a ZIP code, so use "10512."  You can select any store listed.  You will be able to print (2), so make sure you close the print window and hit "Print Coupon" again.

Buy (1) Dove Men's Deodorant Sale Price at $3.99
Use (1) $1 off coupon
Pay $2.99, Receive $3 in Register rewards;  Net Cost = FREE

Remember, you can only get one of these per transaction.  So if you want to buy two, make sure you have them in seperate transactions.

Kroger & My Owensboro Trip

Jayme and I had to leave town for a bit just to get away.  So we decided that we would try out Kroger in Owensboro to compare to our normal shopping trips at Schnucks in Newburgh.  While the trip to Owensboro was a 20 minute drive, we both felt that it may be worth it every once in awhile.  Maybe it was the gas that was $.37 cheaper per gallon (yea, you read it right the first time).  Maybe it was the store itself.  Who knows, maybe it was the BBQ Festival yesterday.  But I thought I would share what my trip was like.

Kroger was a massive store.  This truly was a SUPERmarket.  It had everything one could imagine.   The prices were extremely competitive and there were a ton of employees working.  The store was clean and bright.  They layout seemed confusing, but maybe I am used to my Schnucks too much.

The first thing I did in the store was to sign-up for my new Kroger PLUS card.  This is just another loyalty card but with a few perks here and there.  First, there are many discounts on items throughout the store.  Additionally, there are several other companies (like Shell Gas) that give discounts when you scan your PLUS card there too (Shell gives $.10/gallon).  Additionally, having a PLUS card enables you to receive coupons and discounts from Kroger that someone without a loyalty card would have.  The downside, Kroger tracks your shopping habits.  But isn't that the point with any loyalty card?

Once I had the card in my hand (took 2 minutes at customer service to get), I asked about their coupon policy.  From what I heard, every Kroger is a little different, so I wanted to know specifically what they would double, if any.  To my surprise, Kroger in Owensboro, KY will double any coupon up to $.50.  Any coupon over $.50 will be redeemed at face value.  Additionally, now that I am a PLUS card member, I will begin to get Kroger coupons with which I can stack with manufacturer coupons.

Another nice thing about Kroger is their Catalina and instant discount deals.  Today they wrapped up on a Buy 10 get $5 off instantly deal.  The selection ranged from frozen pizzas to cereals to salad bags.  So it would be easy to get 10 items that all have manufacturer coupons and then save $5 off instantly on top of it.

I can see Jayme and I shopping there more often.  And since we will give some business to this chain (especially since Schnucks does not double coupons ... and we can use this excuse to get out of town), I will make sure I track some deals going on at Kroger too.

Overall it was worth the 20 minute drive.  I mean, sometimes it takes us 15 minutes just to get to Target on the eastside of Evansville.

CHEAP Lay's Kettle Cooked Chips or Sun Chips and Sierra Mist Soda

If you have the Pepsico's "Moments To Save" insert from 5/1 you are on the right track for this deal.  If you were lucky enough to print the coupons while they were available online (if I see them reposted online I will add to this thread) or get two inserts, you can get some great deals on snack items.

CHEAP Hershey's Special Dark Candy @ CVS

For two weeks now some CVS stores have ran a B2G1 sale on Hershey's single bars.  In last week's SmartSource there was a coupon for B1G1 on Hershey's Special Dark singles.  I love dark chocolate - especially when in the freezer!  Here is how to use the sale and stack coupons to save big!

Buy (3) Hershey's Special Dark [regular, w/almonds]
Use (1) B1G1
SALE will mark 3rd candy bar as free.
Pay $1.19 for all three candy bars (like paying $.40 each).

NO Double Coupons @ Schnucks

In seeing 2 double-coupon weeks at Buy-Low over the last month, I started wondering if Schnuck's offered the same deal.  While many locations do have double coupon policies, the Schnuck's in Evansville/Newburgh do not.  I think I will write Schnuck's corporate and let them know that this saves me money, which would encourage me to shop more at Schnucks.

For reference, here is a breakdown of where Schnuck's doubles coupons:

Filler Items @ Walgreens

There are many times I need 1 or 2 cheap filler items at Walgreens so the number of items is at least equal to the number of manufacturer coupons I have in my transaction.  But one has to wonder where is a great place to look?  There are a few places to find cheap filler items.
  • Clearance section - If your WAGS has a dedicated endcap for clearance, be a regular there.  On occassions there are amazing deals!  I once found an endcap full of $1 snack size of Indiana Popcorn on clearance for $.09 each.  The expiration date was still 4 months away, so I guess they were clearing room for other product.
  • Impulse section (by register) - Everyone says stay away from the impulse section [AVERT YOUR EYES!].  But I have found little pieces of candy on the cheap here.  One WAGS in Evansville has pieces of Laffy Taffy candy for $.17 each.
  • Middle of store clearance - If your local WAGS is like mine in Newburgh, there is no specific clearance section.  But in between the front and back aisles is a great place to throw clearance items.  I tried the Chips Ahoy 3-pack cookies with Reese's PB chips... yummy.  They are on clearance from $.99 to $.24
  • Clothing - Buy shirts at Walgreens?  If you just need a yard-shirt, Walgreens has good deals on plain-T's.  I see that some WAGS have t-shirts selling for just $1.  They are not stylish, but neither is super, sweat-soaked clothes after mowing and weed-eating.
  • Finally, there are always caramel candies on sale at WAGS for $.33 each.
Remember, the coupons in the ad and in the monthy coupon books DO NOT COUNT toward the manufacturer coupon count (you also do not have to tear out these coupons).  So these little fillers are good to have in mind just in case.

Cheap Reach Toothbrushes @ Walgreens

OK - I am like many other people when it comes to free toothbrushes at the pharmacy stores.  If you did not know, Walgreens has a sale this week that when you buy (2) 2-pack of select Reach tootbrushes for $3 each, you will receive $2 in Register Rewards.  Many Reach tootbrushes have $2 off 1 Reach toothbrush coupon peelies.  So the deal was intended to be the following:
Buy (2) Reach Toorbrushes for $6
Use (2) Reach $2 peelie coupons and save $4
Pay $2, Receive $2 in RR... so free.

Great!  But, if you were like me this week, I did not get out of bed early on Sunday to go shopping.  So every Walgreens I visted on the way to work/school were sold out.  So what now?

It just so happens that the $2 peelie has no size limit AND the single pack of Reach Total Care toothbrushes is on clearance for $2.19 each.  So what is almost as good as FREE toothbrushes? Almost FREE toothbrushes!

Buy (1) Reach Total Care 1-pack Toothbrush [clearance] for $2.19
     Use (1) $2 off peelie
     Pay $.19/toothbrush

*NOTE* From what I have read online, each Walgreens prices their clearance items individually.  I have seen the same toothbrush on clearance at a different Walgreens for $3.  So if it is higher than what you want to pay and you can wait, then wait.  I often see clearance prices drop gradually on product not moving.

Get $10 off $50 @ Schnucks

I love my Schnucks in Newburgh.  It is clean, and I can find a great variety of deals every week.  One thing that I do not see enough of, however, is the Schnuck's Catalinas/Coupons.  I wish there were more ways to save at this grocery store.  Additionally, in a promise to find and post deals on groceries (not just household products), I am looking to save you money on food.  That is why I was excited to find a deal where you can save $10 off your next $50 purchase at Schnucks [an instant 20% off + your coupons can add up].

First go to this site and register.  You will be entered into a drawing for $5000 (hope the best for someone I know).  But if you invest 15 minutes and watch the 12 videos in the "S," you will get your printable coupon.  Want to add Schnucks to Facebook?  For each LIKE, Schnucks will add $1 to the grand prize (up to $20,000 extra).  Would $25,000 be nice or what?  as of right now, 1,181 people have already done this, so the prize is already at $6,181.  Beyond that, the videos are actually pretty funny (and interesting).  After watching all 12, a coupon will be emailed to the address you entered at registration.

Good luck and happy couponing!

Blogger Went A-Wall

Apparently Blogger went berserk and deleted some posts I made since Wednesday.  If they do not reappear as promised by Blogger, I will do my best to recreate for everyone.

Thanks.

Cheap Arizona Tea products @ CVS

I have been a fan of Arizona Tea since my dad bought me one on one of our long road trips (green tea with honey... mmm).  The 23oz cans normally sell for $1.  Not only does CVS has them marked to $.88, but they are B1G1 this week!  So $.88 for 2!

Cheap Mitchum Deodorant @ CVS & Walgreens

Last week's ad featured $1 off any Mitchum deodorant.  CVS and Walgreens have it on sale for $1.99.  Use the $1 off coupon and get for only $.99!

EDIT: I found a printable here on page 3.

Double Coupons @ Buy-Low

I love double-coupon week at Buy-Low (good through 5/15).  There are great deals to be had.  Here are a few highlights from my shopping trip.
  • Kraft BBQ: Use $1/2 in-ad coupon to bring price down to $.98/2.
  • Kraft Homestyle Mac & Cheese:  These are on sale for $2/4.  If you printed the $1 off coupon discussed here then you can couple with the $1/2 in-ad to buy two for $1.  For $.50 each, I will try!
  • Old Orchard 64oz juice: Select varities are on sale for $1.88.  Most are cocktails with high-frutose corn syrup, but the 100% apple juice is part of that sale as well.  Double the $.50 off (1) coupon and buy for only $.88!  Need a coupon, get one here [not registered with Old Orchard, do so here].
  • Hamburger Helper is on sale for $.99 each.  Buy three and use a $.75 coupon (almost every Sunday and available usually on coupons.com).  Buy-Low will bump up coupon to $1, so get all three for $1.97 (or $.67 each)
  • Wacky Mac Bow Tie Pasta: Priced at $1.69.  $.40 coupon from 5/8 paper doubles to $.80, making each veggie pasta bag only $.89.
  • Vlassic Oval pickles are $2.19.  $.55 off coupon here bumps up to $1 making them only $1.19.
There are many other great combinations, so look for the sale items and stock up if a good price!

Buy-Low's double coupon policy is as follows: Any coupon $.50 or lower will be doubled.  Any coupon from $.51-$.99 will be bumped up to $1.  All coupons $1 and up are entered at face value.

Also, if you have the IGA Advantage card, you will get your total BEFORE COUPONS total toward your discounted gas.

I shopped and added $47 to my savings card before coupons (walked out only paying $21 - a 55% savings).

Finally, a special thanks to Ashley L.!  I never received a Buy-Low ad in the mail, so I am glad she let me know there was a good sale at Buy-Low.  She was just mentioning how she wanted to save money on groceries.  This is how you can get great deals, Ashley!

Cheap Revelon Cosmetics @ CVS

Let me first say that I think my wife is beautiful the way she is.  But she is convinced that she needs make-up.  So I want to help her out any way I can while making sure we do not overspend on these products.  Anyone who has seen a receipt from a cosmetic purchase cringes a little inside (especially at a place like.  That is why I was happy to see the Magic Coupon Machine spit out $3 off any $10 cosmetic purchase.  Couple this with Extra Care Buck offer and coupons and you can get beauty products on the cheap.
Right now CVS has a $7 ECB offer when you spend $15 on Revelon costmetics.  Though the ad says 1 per household, CVS changed it to let 2 per household.  Next, scan your card at the MCM and look for the $3 off coupon.  Only have one?  Come back the next day and scan your card again (or go to a different CVS).  Why the next day?  This coupon is only good for 1 day, so be prepapred to shop.

Final point before I let you know how we did, make sure you sign-up for the Beauty Club.  It is a free club that ties to your CVS card.  For every $50 you spend you will receive $5 back in ECB.  Not a member?  You can sign-up at the register (plus you receive 10% off your first purchase!).

Transaction 1:
(1) Revlon StayColor Foundation $13.49
(1) Revlon Nail Polish $5.49
Total: $18.98 - (2) $2 off Revelon ColorStay product from Sunday paper earlier this month - $3 MCM coupon = $11.98 + $7 in ECB (Revelon Purchase) = Net Purchase $4.98
[If you just signed up for Beauty Club your transaction would look like this:
     $18.98 - 10% = $17.08 - (2) $2 off Revelon ColorStay product from Sunday paper earlier this month -     $3 MCM coupon = $10.08 + $7 in ECB (Revelon Purchase)
Transaction 2:
(1) Revlon StayColor Foundation $13.49
Total: $13.49 - (1) $2 off Revelon ColorStay product from Sunday paper earlier this month - $3 MCM coupon = $8.49 + $7 in ECB (Revelon Purchase) = $1.49

Total OOP: $20.47.  Receive $14 in ECB for Revlon $30 in purchases.  Net Price for (2) bottles of foundation and (1) nail polish = $6.47

Remember, every $50 in beauty products you purchase, you will get $5 back.  These two transactions amount tov$32.47.  So if you are already a member, this will help you inch closer to that $50 mark without spending a fortune.

Good luck.

Save with email newsletters @ CVS!

    CVS Email Signup Site
Have you signed up for CVS email alerts?  If not you can sign-up here.  By signing up you agree to receive weekly emails about sales and new items.  Part of this agreement is money saving coupons IN ADDITION to what you already get at CVS.  Just for signing up you will receive a $4 off any $20 purchase, which is calculated before any coupon use!
    • For example, last month I purchased $20 worth of P&G products (2 Tide, 4 Charmin, 2 Head and Shoulders) that totalled $31.  I redemmed a $5 off any $25 purchase coupon I received through their email marketing campaigns.  Then I used $7 worth of manufacturer and store coupons bringing my OOP total to $19 (before I used my ECB from previous purhases), after which I received a $10 ECB - making my effective purchase of only $9.
Other times I receive % off coupons for non-sale items.  These are great for non-advertised items that you may want/need.

And as explained above, these coupons can be combined with other store and manufacturer coupons, so stack to save!
This is a great EXTRA coupon that I receive every 2-4 weeks.

*NOTE* These extra $ off coupons cannot be redeemed with other CVS $ or % off coupons.  Make sure you read the print before attempting to use to avoid cash register frustration.

    Free women's Razors @ Walgreens

If you got a Sunday paper you may have noticed the $2 off Noxema 4-pack razor coupon (if not is may still be available here).

    Kraft Homestyle Coupon

Just saw a $1 off coupon post on Twitter.  You can print it here.

Has anyone tried this?  Lately I have been making my own mac n cheese, but if good and cheap I may try something new.

$2 off pork ribs w/purchase of KC Masterpiece

Go here to find a coupon for $2 off pork ribs when you purchase any KC Masterpiece.  Starting today, KC Masterpiece is on sale for $1 at Schnucks.  Couple that the sale of $1.99/lb for spare ribs going on there too and you got most of a meal for $1!

While on the grilling site, make sure you check out recipies like the Gilled Mini Caprese Pizzas.  They look tasty!

    Free Zrytec 5-Count

Having allergies this time of year is horrible.  Luckily there are plenty of freebies out there.  Snag a free 5-pack of Zrytec by registering here.  I have used Benadryl in the past, but this year I am trying NOT to doze off.  So this is a nice deal for me.

    Cheap Gillette Razor @ Walgreens

If you got a Sunday paper with a P&G insert, you saw the $4 off any Gillette Fusion Razor.  Walgreens has these on sale for $9.89.  Use the $4 off coupon to buy for $5.89 and receive a $5 RR for your next purchase.  That is like paying $.89 for this razor.  From personal experience, these are very nice razors.

    Easter Clearance @ Target

Target is clearing shelves and trying to get rid of their Easter products.  All non-candy Easter products are 90%+ off!  I knew we needed to stock up for next year for our little guy first Easter egg hunt (plus our church always needs eggs for their community Easter hunt).
    • 12-pack plastic eggs: Retail $1, Sale Price $.09
    • Easter basket grass: Retail $.50, Sale Price $.04
    • Felt Easter baskets: Retail $4.00, Sale Price $.40
FYI, I did not see Easter candy at Evansville Eastside Target, but I heard that it was 75% off.

    FREE Tylenol Precise @ Walgreens

If you have back pain and like to use pain relieving creme or patches, try the new Tylenol Precise for free!

    1) Go here and sign-up to get $5 off coupon straight from Tylenol.  Remember, you will be able to print 2 if you hit the back button 3 times.  If you want more than 2 you will have to use a separate computer (limit is 2/pc).
    2) Use the $3 off coupon in the Walgreens May coupon book.  If you are buying multiples, it will deduct $3 X number of Tylenol Precise ($6 off for two, $9 for three...)

The items are on sale this week for $7.99.  Use the $5 off coupon first to avoid the beeps.  Then use the coupon in the coupon book to make it free!

Remember, if you are buying two Tylenol Preceise and using 4 coupons, you need to have at least 4 items in your cart.  I treated myself with some Hershey Dark Chocolate bars (on sale for $.49 each this week).  So my transaction was a little under $1 before tax.
