I am not sure what triggered the coupon, but my shopping trip triggered an $8 coupon for Nutramigen formula at Walgreens this week.  Plus the coupon had a phone number for some rewards program.  I will get more details if I can and share.

Make sure you scan your card at CVS this week at the Magic Coupon Machine.  I received a coupon for "FREE Ritz Crackerfuls 6oz or a FREE box of Newtons Fruit Thins 10.5oz (up to $2.50)."  I picked up some Ritz Crackerfuls for mid-day snacks.

Save on Cleaning Supplies @ Kmart

Through 9/23, save big on cleaning products at Kmart stores.  Simply purchase $15 worth of participating products (before coupons) in one shopping trip and receive a $5 coupon for your next shopping visit.  Products include:

If you shop at CVS, Kroger or other retailer with loyalty card, you may be missing some extra money.  SavingStar is a great website where you sync your loyalty card with their site and add eCoupons to your account.  When you shop and purchase the items you add to your card, you will get the eCoupon credit to your account.

Walmart Pays Overages!

Some people have been asking how to additionally cut grocery costs, so I have been scouring the internet to find good coupon deals on food items.  But one thing to remember is that you can get paid overages for coupons at Walmart.

For example, last night I used the $5/1 Bengay coupon (no longer available) to purchase a BenGay 4.2oz creme at Walmart.  The store had it priced at $4.23, so they actually paid me $.87 to take it.  If this was the only thing on my transaction, Walmart will actually open the register and pay me in cash!  However, since I had other items in my transaction, the $.87 rolls over to pay for other items in my cart.

If you have one of these high-value coupons, use them.  If you do not need, donate or give away to someone who wants it.  This helps everyone as you get more discounts on your items and someone gets FREE BenGay (or other product)

Clearance Pampers Wipes @ Walgreens

Look for the 216ct Pamper's Thick Care wipes on clearance at Walgreens.  Some stores have on clearance for only $1.89!  These normally sell at $7.49 (sale price $6.49).  If you have a $.50/1 coupon, you can nab these for only $1.39!

$2 Off Pork Ribs = CHEAP RIBS

One of my favorite events is rib night at my parents.  There is nothing like some good ribs.  Go here to find a $2 off any 2lb or larger rib purchase (fresh or frozen).  I have never seen this coupon before; the closest was a $2 when you buy a bbq sauce, so I was happy to see this coupon on its own.

As a bonus, look for a good sale on ribs.  If you can find for $2/lb, ask the meat counter to wrap each 2 pound package separately.  This constitutes two items and you can use two coupons.  This means you can get 4lbs of ribs for only $4!  $1/lb is a great deal on ribs!

FREE Reach Floss @ Target and Walmart

Go here to find a $1 off any Reach floss product.  I found the coupon on page 5 of all the coupons.  Target and Walmart routinely have the floss priced between $.89-$.98.  Remember, Walmart pays overages too!

Keep Your Costs Down @ Walgreens

I talked about coupons with one of the Walgreens employees this morning.  He was curious about how I always tend to keep my costs low.  So I figure that I would clarify one thing about the blog postings.

OOP = Out of Pocket
RR = Register Rewards

When I let people know about a deal, I often say that this is so many dollars OOP after coupons.  Keep in mind, I do not mention that I use previous RR on these transactions.  So where one purchase may be $4 OOP, I may have used a $3.50 RR on the transaction bringing my true OOP total to only $.50.

Make sure you remember that total items in your transaction must be equal to or greater than the number of manufacturer coupons + RR you have.  So if you need to use a $4 RR to bring your total to near $0, add in a back to school highlighter for only $.09.

Issue with Gillette/Old Spice RR at Walgreens

In my shopping trip this morning, I discovered an issue with the Gillette RR deal this morning.  The deal was supposed to be a $10 RR when you buy $30 or more in Gillette, Old Spice or venus products.  The RR is not printing at the Newburgh, Indiana store.  The store refunded me $10 in cash after they tested the transasction a few times. 

There seems to be an issue with P&G products and RR at Walgreens recently.  If you have issues, make sure you remain calm and polite.  If you still have issues, contact the Catalina Coupon company at 888-8COUPON.

Update of Gillette deal @ Walgreens

I was hoping that the $5 RR if you buy $20 or more in Gillette/Venus shaving products applied to the Gillette ProGlide razors on sale this week with its own $5 in RR.  I tried buying (2) razors for $9.99 each and a shave gel for $1.99, which should have given me both the $5 RR deals.  After discussing with store management, we both learned that the razor is excluded from the $20 or more deal.

Just a word of caution in case you saw the same deal I did.

REALLY CHEAP Light Bulbs@ Walmart

Right now, Southerm Indiana Walmarts have a special price reduction on compact florescent light bulbs, CFL, thanks to Vectren Energy. A 3-pack of GE13-watt bulbs (like using a 60w incadesent, is normally $6.  Grab them now for $.50!  They also have another brand that is selling a 6-pack of 13 watt for $1.  In either case, that is $.16 per bulb compared to $2 normally!!!!!  No coupon neccessary for these prices too!

I found at Newburgh and east side Walmart in Evansville with plenty in stock.  The east-side Walmart is limiting to 5 per customer, but I was able to grab more than that at the Newburgh location.

Bonus @ Kroger, CVS and More!

So I stumbled across a CVS tweet a few weeks back about a new website called Savingstar.com.  I was not in a hurry to post so I could make sure that the service worked before letting others know about it. 

This site is free and pays you for some items you may already buy.  During registration, users are asked for the ZIP code.  Once entered, the site returns a list of all local stores with loyalty cards that can be used.  NOTE: I had to add a Kentucky ZIP to get Kroger listed, so if you have a Kroger Plus card and in Southern Indiana, you may have to adjust the ZIP.  Enter your loyalty card number (from Kroger Plus card, CVS ExtraCare...) and you are almost ready.  Go through the eCoupons and simply select the ones you want.  There is no cost to add these eCoupons to your loyalty card.  Now shop.

These eCoupons work a little different than other coupons as they do not immediately reduce the price of the item.  Instead, the stores report back to Savingstar what items you purchased.  If you purchased a qualified item, you will get credit for the item in your account.  Once you reach at least $5, you can request a check or donate your money to a charity.

Last month I purchased some Glad bags from Kroger.  I used a $.75 off coupon on this $3 item.  I also added the $.75 eCoupon from Savingstar before I checked out.  I logged into my account this week and noticed the $.75 credit in my account.  This coupled with my $.75 paper coupon gave me $1.50 this item!  50% savings using just one paper coupon.

Transacation Limits @ Walgreens

Billy L. has informed me that the Walgreens in Newburgh, IN is now limiting customers to two transactions.  I guess people have started clearing shelves when an item is free.

Although this doesn't effect me, I would encourage people who it does effect to plan their shopping trips a little better.

On the bright side, maybe the Newburgh, IN Wags will have this in stock now...

If you are a regular to the Magic Coupon Machine you may have noticed that the coupons change each week.  What I have gathered, however, is that the coupons spitting out this week are often items on sale next week.  This was defintely the case with some coupons from last week. 

If you were lucky to get the $1 off any Trident or Stride single pack coupon from the MCM, then go to CVS and pick up the Trident Vitality gum.  This week it is on sale for $.99 (coupon will automatically adjust down to $.99) making the gum free.  But the bonus is that this week Trident Vitality has a $.99 ECB!

FREE CVS Green Tag

This week CVS' Magic Coupon Machine is sptting out a coupon for a FREE Green Tag.  If you are not familiar with it, it is a small plastic tag that ties to your resuseable bag.  When you shop at CVS, scan your ExtraCare card, some items and then make sure that the cashier scans your Green Tag.  After 4 transactions (1 per store per day), you will get back $1.  That is like getting $.25 per trip!  I have already racked up $5 from my green tag just this year.

Remember to use it in the pharmacy too!

Realistic Expectations

A friend of mine mentioned couponing a few weeks before it was fashionable.  I started researching different websites and learning how to get the system to work with my shopping habits instead of falling into the marketing trap retailers want you to.  I hunted for great deals and places to shop.  And I saved a ton of money.  With TLC's Extreme Couponing show, however, things have changed.  People expect to save 99% at the grocery.  Let's be honest, no one really does that.  If you read online, the people featured on the show were told by TLC to be extreme to the point where it is plain wacky.  Who buys 124 bottles of Excedrin and stores it for a rainy day?  Really?

So let's discuss what to expect - realistically.  Coupons will rarely get you everything for free.  There are some things you need that you would be hard-pressed to find coupons.  For example, when is the last time you saw coupons for watermelons? apples? oranges? non-speciality or flavored milk?  Yea, I didn't think you saw a coupon for those things either.  So can you survive on free candy and discounted, pre-packaged deli meat?  Sure.  But you probably won't be healthy.

Couponing is there to save you money.  That is for sure.  But these shows make it seem like you can go and pay $2 for $1000 worth of groceries.  That is just not going to happen.  Remember, we are being real here.  But what CAN happen is that you save money.

This evening at Schnucks I paid $48 for $75 worth of groceries.  My cart included Cherrios, corn (canned and fresh), green beans (canned and fresh), potatoes (boxed hash browns and fresh), salad bag, many cans of fruit and some frozen items among other things.  Did I cringe at paying nearly $50 for groceries? NO WAY!  I saved 36%!  I saved $27!  What is $27 to you?  A few hours of work?  1/3 tank of gas? 1 month phone bill? Childcare for 1 day?  $27 means different things to different people.  And if it means that I get a few dirty stares shopping slowly so I can save 36% on groceries, then so be it.

So what is $27 to you?  Think about it.  And if saving that money is a good thing for you and your family, then maybe couponing isn't such a bad thing.

Why I Coupon

Jayme and I started trying to save money long ago.  A penny saved is a penny earned, right?  We started penny pinching when I first moved to Evansville to live with her the better part of a decade ago.  She worked and went to school and I worked for modest pay... part-time.  I had no health insurance, a car that always gave me trouble and lots of dreams of pricey items.  But it is hard to lie, we were broke.  If it was not on sale, it only had our attention as we walked down the grocery aisle.  Some might say our lives were boring since we never went out to party and our only treat was a visit to Steak and Shake.  But we had each other. 

Jayme and I have been through rough times, but we have always found a way through.  Those frugal behaviors years ago helped us pay rent, car insurance and massive amounts of student loan debt  even on low incomes.  So if they worked before, they can work now too.  We have been very blessed to be where we are now.  And I am thankful every day for those countless blessings.  "Ask any ye shall receive.  Knock and the door shall be opened for you."  Now I have a young boy growing up fast, a house and am nearing my bachelor's degree.  Why is this NOT the time to save for the future?  This is why I coupon.
